Is Ammonia-Free Hair Color Less Damaging in 2026?

Ammonia-free hair color can be a great option for achieving beautifully rich and lasting color – but ammonia-free doesn't mean damage-free. Like any hair color, its impact on your hair depends on the entire formulation and how it's used. Plus, as Wella Professionals scientists discovered, the hair damage potential is significantly linked to how your hair color manages metals.

Why metals, you might wonder? Metals like copper can affect the color result and damage potential of any hair color. But recently Wella scientists have found out that in ammonia free colors, MEA, the most common ammonia alternative creates a unique environment where metals present in your hair (specifically Iron and Copper) become highly reactive during the coloring process, potentially contributing to damage. But don’t let that put you off. 2026 has seen the launch of a new ammonia-free hair color specifically designed to address this newly uncovered findings. Keep reading to learn more about ammonia-free hair color, damage control, and Pure Perfection's Supercharged Metal Purifier...

What Does Ammonia-Free Hair Color Actually Mean?

Ammonia-free means a hair color is formulated without ammonia. But, despite some confusion, it doesn’t automatically mean chemical-free or damage-free. Before we get into why, it’s important to know that there are two types of ammonia-free hair colors:

  • Non-oxidative hair colors, like temporary or semi-permanent dyes, are ammonia-free because they simply don’t need an alkalizer like ammonia to do their job. They’re designed to color the surface of hair without significantly altering its internal structure.
  • Oxidative hair colors, like demi-permanent or permanent hair dyes, need to penetrate the hair cuticle in order for the color to develop, usually with the help of ammonia and its alkalizing powers. Ammonia-free colors use alternative ingredients to recreate the same alkalizing effect, so the color is still able to penetrate the hair and provide gray coverage and lastingness.

Usually, when people talk about ammonia-free hair colors, they're referring to oxidative formulations; demi-permanent and permanent colors that might usually benefit from ammonia, but have been formulated with an alternative ingredient. The most popular is MEA (monoethanolamine), which – like ammonia – raises the pH level of the hair to swell the cuticle, so color molecules can rush inside and deliver your dream shade.

Ammonia vs. MEA: How Each One Affects Your Hair

Ammonia and MEA both have their place in permanent and demi-permanent hair colors. There are pros and cons to each, so let's take a look at what sets them apart...

Cons

• Strong, distinctive odor.

• MEA may be less efficient than ammonia at delivering maximum lift and color saturation, requiring a carefully balanced formula and advanced technologies such as metal purifier.

Is Ammonia-Free Hair Color Better for Damaged Hair?

Ammonia-free hair color isn't less damaging – and how color performs and how much it damages depends on the entire formulation, with the supporting ingredients also playing a role in how your final result looks and feels, particularly when it comes to managing metals naturally present in the hair.

Most of us have a build-up of metals in our hair that come from the water we wash with, and Wella Professionals scientists discovered that MEA – the popular ammonia alternative – can make these metals highly reactive during the permanent hair coloring process.

As a result, damage can occur during coloring, making metal-controlling technology crucial in ammonia-free hair color. That's why all Wella Professionals ammonia-free colors contain Metal Purifier. And because highly reactive metals, like iron and copper, are of particular concern in permanent hair color, our first permanent ammonia-free color, Pure Perfection, features our Supercharged Metal Purifier.

This exclusive technology captures iron and copper particles that can become highly reactive during the coloring process, helping to protect the hair from metal-induced damage.

”Pure Perfection is truly unique! Color results are pure, weightless and natural.”

Ammonia-Free Colors Compared: Demi-Permanent vs. Permanent

As we mentioned above, 'ammonia-free hair color' usually refers to demi-permanent or permanent formulas that use ammonia alternatives – not semi-permanent or temporary colors, which simply do not need the effects of ammonia. But which is less damaging: demi-permanent or permanent color?

  • If you want a gentler color process: choose a demi-permanent color, like Color Touch. Ammonia-free demi-permanent colors generally cause less structural change to your hair.
  • If you want longer-lasting color, stronger grey coverage or lightening: choose a permanent color, like Pure Perfection. Ammonia-free permanent color uses high performance formulation to deliver these results, so it has greater potential to affect your hair's structure.

Here's your quick answer, plus the key pros and cons to help you decide which is right for you...
